"Art is pointless" I am pretty sure we have all heard this phrase many times. Living in a pragmatic country like Singapore, it's no surprise that at least at a point in our lives, we have been discouraged or dissuaded to pursue the arts, regardless be it as a pastime activity or educational subject. However, more and more recently, articles are published discussing the importance of an arts education for our children, and the negative aspects of a lack of creativity in the workplace. All these talks have pushed us to talk more about the societal value in art, and why it's crucial that we regard it more seriously.
One of the biggest lessons that people take from engaging in art is that they comprehend and embrace their own self-expression. Self-expression depicts one's personality and showcases his or her individual traits. While there are many ways that people could express themselves, art is by far the most effective and quickest way to get to know one another. Whether it be through painting canvases, dancing or acting, art provides a platform for people to freely communicate their ideas, thoughts, and opinions visually, thus showing the world their authentic spiritual and emotional self. This is the reason why preschools and kindergartens heavily influence children to participate more in the arts, as it allows the adults to better comprehend their characters and dispositions.
Self-expression is also the first step into boosting confidence and self-esteem, two highly-vital traits that everyone has to possess to succeed well in life. For example, our Art Jamming Workshop is conducted in a non-judgemental environment as we desire our clients to not only develop their artistic skills at their own pace but to also be more optimistic in showcasing their work in public, while surrounded by friends and loved ones. Possessing strong self-expression also enables us to learn more about ourselves, thus allowing us to reflect on our life and behavior, and to make changes and improve ourselves along the way.
You don't have to join our Art Jamming workshop to embark on a new self-empowered journey. Simply gather some art tools and canvas, and allow your imagination to go wild. No one is born or blessed with impeccable creative talent, so don't worry if you're afraid to let your hand and brain go into work. Take a step at a time, look at inspirational paintings for guidance, and soon you might find yourself unable to stop. Remember, everyone can draw. The one thing stopping you into doing so is yourself, so tackle that complication and delve into the world of art!
