Quick answer: art jamming is a social painting session where the canvas, paints, brushes and aprons are laid out for you, a facilitator keeps things moving, and you take your painting home. No experience needed, no drawing ability assumed. Sessions start from $25 per person and run one to two and a half hours depending on the format.

It has become one of the most-booked group activities in Singapore, mostly because it solves a problem other activities do not: everybody can do it, at the same time, without anyone being obviously bad at it.

What actually happens in a session

The shape is the same whether there are six of you or sixty.

You arrive to a table already set: a blank canvas on an easel or laid flat, a palette, brushes in a few sizes, water, and an apron. A facilitator opens with a short brief — what the paints do, how to mix a colour you cannot find, what to do if you hate what you have made forty minutes in. Then everyone paints. The facilitator circulates, answers questions and helps anyone who has frozen.

Nobody teaches you to paint a specific thing. That is the distinction people most often miss, and it is covered properly in what art jamming actually means.

What is included

• The canvas, sized to the format you book, and yours to take home.
• Acrylic paints, brushes, palettes and water pots.
• An apron each. Acrylic does not come out of clothing, so wear it.
• A facilitator, who sets up, runs the session and cleans up afterwards.

The formats, and who books which

Express — one hour, 20x20cm canvas, from $25 per person. The shortest and cheapest option. Suits children, tight schedules and anyone who suspects an afternoon of painting is more than they want.

Classic — 2.5 hours, 30x40cm canvas, from $32 per person. The default for corporate groups and the one most people mean by art jamming. The extra time is not about painting more; it is about the group settling in before they start.

Neon — the same session under blacklight with UV paint, so the artwork glows. Visually the most striking version, and popular for parties and evening corporate sessions. How a neon session works goes into what changes.

Tote bags and team murals — paint a cotton tote instead of a canvas, or one large canvas together as a group. Both suit corporate bookings for different reasons: one produces something people use, the other something for the office wall.

Who it suits

Art jamming works for essentially every age, which is unusual. The minimum booking is five painters, and beyond that the constraints are practical rather than about ability.

• Corporate teams. The most common booking. It gives quiet people a way to take part without having to perform, which is more than can be said for most team activities. More on that in the benefits of art jamming.
• Birthdays and celebrations. Adults and children both, though the format changes.
• Schools. Large cohorts, run in rotation.
• Friends and family. No agenda beyond an afternoon.

What it costs

Published from-prices sit on the prices page, and the per-head rate drops as the group grows. The number on a quote depends on three things: how many people, whether you come to our studio or we come to you, and when.

Weekday afternoons are the easiest slots to book and to price. Add-ons — easels, extra canvases, a neon upgrade, an ice breaker to open the session — are all optional and itemised separately, so you can see what each one costs before agreeing to it.

Studio or your venue

Our studio is five minutes from Tai Seng MRT and is the simplest option: everything is already there. The alternative is that we bring it to you — an office, a function room, a school hall, a condo common area. Mobile sessions need a bit more from the space, mainly tables and somewhere to put wet canvases, but they are otherwise identical.

Booking one

Send a date and a rough headcount. A quote comes back within 24 hours with your group size, venue and timing already worked in, so there is nothing to discover later. Nothing needs to be confirmed to get a number — a rough figure is enough to price against.
